Pink October in Strasbourg
Every autumn, pink ribbons bloom just about everywhere. Pink October is the month dedicated to raising awareness and screening for breast cancer, a cause that touches nearly every family in one way or another. In Strasbourg as elsewhere, the mobilisation runs strong. This year, Hôtel Origami is getting involved too, in a concrete way.
What is Pink October?
Pink October is an international campaign that began in the early 1990s. Every year, throughout the month of October, it reminds us of a simple but vital idea: when detected early, breast cancer can be cured in the vast majority of cases. The pink ribbon has become its universal symbol. Behind the colour, the aim is twofold: to inform about the disease and to encourage regular screening, which saves lives.
Pink October in Strasbourg
Strasbourg mobilises every year with real energy. Solidarity walks and runs, events, buildings lit up in pink and information stands punctuate the month. The best-known event, La Strasbourgeoise, brings together thousands of participants on routes open to all, runners and walkers alike. It is a chance to come together, to move as one and to support research and patient care.
Hôtel Origami gets involved
This year, we wanted to do more than display a ribbon. Until 31 October, a donation box is set up at the Hôtel Origami reception. Every donation you drop in, we double it: for every euro given, the hotel adds another. The full amount is then donated to the association l'Alsace Contre le Cancer, which funds supportive care for patients in Alsace, such as adapted physical activity and art therapy.
And to show your support, pink ribbons are available for free at reception, whether you are a guest of the hotel or simply passing through the neighbourhood. A small gesture, multiplied by everyone, that ends up making a difference.
Screening, the key thing to remember
The message of Pink October comes down to a few words: the earlier breast cancer is spotted, the greater the chances of recovery. Regular screening, through a mammogram, can detect abnormalities even before any symptoms appear. In France, an organised screening programme is offered free of charge every two years to women aged 50 to 74. The best thing is still to talk to your doctor, who can guide each person according to her situation.
