Strasbourg en automne
Strasbourg in autumn
If you had to pick a season to discover Strasbourg, autumn would be a strong contender. The light turns golden, the terraces empty out a little, the vineyards blaze with red and gold, and the local cuisine enters its finest period. It is the time of the grape harvest, of new wine and of warming dishes. From Hôtel Origami, a few minutes from the centre of Strasbourg, here is how to make the most of Alsace in autumn.
Why visit Strasbourg in autumn?
Autumn has real charm here. After the summer crowds and before the Christmas market rush, October offers a calmer window, perfect for strolling. The days stay mild, the low light flatters the facades and the canals, and the surrounding forests take on spectacular colours. It is also the height of the grape harvest: the whole region lives to the rhythm of the vine, village festivals and the first tastings.
Autumn colours in the city
You do not need to go far to enjoy the show. In Strasbourg itself, the parks turn golden. Parc de l'Orangerie, the largest and most popular in the city, is gorgeous in October: golden foliage, a lake and its stork enclosure, the emblem of Alsace. Right next door, Parc des Contades offers the shade of its tall trees, and the Botanical Garden, in the Esplanade district, remains a haven of calm. The banks of the Ill and the Petite France also photograph beautifully in the autumn light.
From Hôtel Origami, the tram takes you easily to these spots. To plan your walks, take a look at our guide to the parks and gardens of Strasbourg.
The wine route and the grape harvest
Autumn is the ideal season to escape onto the Alsace Wine Route. It unfolds over 170 km of vineyards, from Marlenheim to Thann, linking flower-filled villages, wine cellars and golden hillsides. South-west of Strasbourg, several villages are easy to visit on a day trip. Molsheim is only about fifteen minutes away by train. Obernai, a lively fortified town, is around 31 km away, less than 30 minutes by train. A little further, Barr, about 40 km and 40 minutes by train, is one of the wine capitals of the Bas-Rhin.
These villages host wonderful grape harvest festivals. The one in Barr, among the oldest in Alsace, is traditionally held on the first weekend of October, with its grand parade of flowered floats on the Sunday. Obernai follows around mid-October with its folk procession. Parades, music, tastings and a cheerful atmosphere: Alsace just as you imagine it.
From Hôtel Origami, reach Strasbourg station in a few minutes by tram (line A, Rotonde stop), then let the regional train take you into the heart of the vineyards. To go further, discover our guide to the Alsace Wine Route.
Autumn on the plate
The cold season awakens Alsatian cooking. This is the time for game, such as venison or wild boar, for slow-cooked dishes, onion tart and, of course, new wine, that grape juice still fermenting, often enjoyed with walnuts and fromage blanc. The winstubs, those typical bistros, are at their best: you settle in by the warmth around a choucroute or a baeckeoffe.
